Nigerians, brace up for the challenges ahead. Prices of imported used cars are expected to rise appreciably in the New Year as the Federal Government begins the collection of 70 per cent duty on second-hand vehicles imported into the country from January 1, 2015.
This is the second phase of the national automotive policy, which was announced in November 2013.
In a move to encourage local assembling of vehicles, the government had last year raised the import tariff on fully-built cars and used vehicles from 22 per cent to 70 per cent. The first phase of the policy involving the payment of 35 percent duty came into effect in February 2014.
The second phase of the policy involving another 35 percent increase of the levy, expected to take effect on July 1, 2014, was later postponed to January 1, 2015 after consultations with stakeholders.
Following the first 35 percent duty increase on imported used cars, auto dealers at the Berger Yard Auto Market along the Apapa/Oshodi Expressway in Lagos reportedly reduced the number of imports by half due to a corresponding rise in the cost of imports.
Dealers, who spoke with our correspondent, said sales had been badly hit as a result of the implementation of the first phase of the policy.
When our correspondent visited the Berger Yard Auto Market on Tuesday, activities had considerably slowed down. Car dealers hanged around the various parks at the huge market and called out to passers-by in the hope of getting them to purchase some of the vehicles on display.
A car dealer, Okechukwu Madueke, said, "Compared to previous years, sale this Yuletide is really bad. Usually at this period, we would have many people rushing to buy cars. At this park alone, we could sell between 10 and 15 cars daily; so, by the time you put the figure together for the other parks, you will know how well we were doing then. But now, it is a struggle to sell two tp three cars daily.
"I actually expected that there would be a rush to buy vehicles before the January 1 deadline to beat the enforcement of the second phase of the tariff increase, but things are not going that way at all."
The car dealer also said the heavy traffic along the Oshodi/Apapa Expressway and the devaluation of the naira were other factors that could be responsible for the poor sale.
Punch gathered that the current situation at the Berger Yard Market had been so for the past six months. Some dealers expressed their frustration at the traffic situation along the route, which they said could be one of the reasons for the drop in sales.

Only Those Who Love Poverty Will Vote Jonathan – Osinbajo
The vice presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Professor Yemi Osinbajo has declared that Nigerians are already tired of the mess the President Goodluck Jonathan-led government has plunged the country into, saying only gullible people who like poverty, hunger and want will case their vote for Jonathan in 2015.
The highly respected pastor, who spoke at a town hall meeting with artisans, tradesmen and farmers, organized by the Lagos State government and held at Blue Roof, LTV, Agidingbi, Ikeja, reiterated that there must be a change of government at the federal level to liberate Nigerians from poverty.
According to Osinbajo, "No one is ignorant of all that is happening to us in this country. No one likes hunger and poverty but people are hungry. In 2015, only those who love to continue to be hungry would prefer that the government in power at the centre remains there.
"By God's grace, we would remove them from the seat of power.
The people there presently cannot do anything because they don't know how to. They lack the capacity and capability to govern the country. I pray for the farmers and artisans that the Lord will bless us in the incoming year."
He lauded Governor Babatunde Fashola for his efforts and achievements in Lagos State, adding that he had the best record of achievements in the country.
Also speaking, APC flag bearer in Lagos State, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode said APC had continuously provided good governance to the people of the state.

Sound Sultan
I'm full of expectation that 2015 will be a ground-breaking year for the music industry, which I'm passionate about. 2014 was a good year for me and the Naija Ninja crew as we took the brand a step higher. I look forward to a consolidation this year as we aim to become the biggest musical group in 2015.
For me, my music is going for more national and international glory, bigger shows and bigger tours. Politically, 2015 is strategic for Nigeria and my hope and prayer is that we get it right this time around and politicians as well as party candidates do not foment trouble and cause violence.
Oga Bello
My 2015 wish and expectation is that the right leader that has Nigeria's interest at heart gets elected. Our politicians should embrace peace and have the interest of the masses at heart. When this is done, the country will move forward and we will all be better for it.
As an actor and movie maker, I want to do bigger films and have more returns. I expect that the movie industry booms and all the bickering among guild heads stops. Let us unite and move this industry forward. I expect greater and more fulfilling things in 2015.
Captain Ekehinde
My expectation for 2015 is progress; and there cannot be progress if there is no peace. The likes of Dangote will not find Nigeria conducive if there is no peace. So, peace for my country; and elections that would be free and fair. Then, as a family man, I expect divine lifting in 2015. I and my wife, Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde and the children will experience God's favour in 2015 as we bring our desires to God. He says He will do much more than we ask or think according to His power. So, forward movement in 2015.
GT the Guitar Man

Taiwo Oladoye

Recounting my blessings, 2014 saw the release of four singles in all, namely: Mukulumuke, Ololufe, I Will Not Forget (produced by Tosin Paul) and very recently, Lovey Lovey (produced by Mix Master J).
Also, I got two music awards: MEGA 2014 Best Afro Pop Single and NGMA 2014 Best Female Vocalist.
Thirdly, there was lots of love and support from my friends, family, fans, the media, my colleagues etc. To God be all the glory! 2015 by God's grace, will see the release of my double album-my sophomore album and a worship album. I'll also be working on more videos, and my first international tour. I trust God for the grace to surpass my expectations in all areas, more blessings to all my friends, fans, family, and loved ones, as well as a peaceful election period in Nigeria, amen.
Enny Okosun
My plans for 2015 are to shoot more videos, collaborate with some artistes all over the world, start an NGO to reach out to the less privileged. Also, my wish is to make a positive change, especially in Nigeria and the entire Africa!
Waconzy
For Nigeria, I wish that 2015 will bring about peaceful elections and that we will defeat terrorism. For myself, I wish that the American mainstream music industry will welcome and accept my brand.
For my fans, I wish them long life and prosperity. For the media men and women, I pray that they work less and make more money. Also thanking them for a great 2014.
Don't miss out on a blessing just because it is not packaged the way you expect it.
If you want to get something done, go get it done! Don't doubt yourself.
The journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step.
Don't compare-be unique. Don't fight your misfortune-transform it. Don't avoid failure-use it. Don't dwell on mistakes-learn from them. Don't back down-stand proud. God has destined great things for every one of us, so don't be afraid of 2015.
I wish you success and Gods unending grace as we enter the new year. #ChopOgbono.

Missing AirAsia Plane is Likely 'At the Bottom of the Sea'
Missing AirAsia flight QZ8501 was flying 'about 160 km/h too slow' when it encountered bad weather conditions, according to aviation experts. And now as the search resumes for the Airbus A320, which went missing at 6.17am on Sunday morning while travelling from Indonesia to Singapore with 162 people on board, speculation on what may have happened points to weather, speed and an older radar system.
On Monday, the head of Indonesia's National Search and Rescue Agency, Henry Bambang Sulistyo, said that the plane is most likely 'at the bottom of the sea'. Mr Sulistyo told a press conference:
'Based on the coordinates given to us and evaluation that the estimated crash position is in the sea, the hypothesis is the plane is at the bottom of the sea. That's the preliminary suspicion and it can develop based on the evaluation of the result of our search.'Aviation expert Geoffrey Thomas spoke to several check captains and believes the pilot of the QZ8501 encountered difficult weather conditions but flew too slow in his efforts to avoid it.
'The QZ8501 was flying too slow, about 100 knots which is about 160 km/h too slow. 'I have a radar plot which shows him at 36,000 feet and climbing at a speed of 353 knots, which is approximately 100 knots too slow. At that altitude that's exceedingly dangerous. Pilots believe that the crew, in trying to avoid the thunderstorm by climbing, somehow have found themselves flying too slow and thus induced an aerodynamic stall similar to the circumstances of the loss of Air France AF447 to crash in 2009,' Mr Thomas told AAP.The Air France AF447 crashed into the Atlantic Ocean in 2009 while en route from Rio De Janeiro to Paris.
Meanwhile, the billionaire CEO of AirAsia has described missing flight QZ8501 as his 'worst nightmare' as the massive air and sea search for the plane resumed at first light on Monday. A massive search and rescue operation was launched on Sunday but was suspended for the night due to unworkable conditions.
Tony Fernandes spoke of his horror over the situation after the plane lost contact with air traffic control with 155 passengers and seven crew members on board at about 6.17am local time, a short time after the pilot asked to deviate from the flight path due to 'bad weather'.
'We have no idea at the moment what went wrong,' Mr Fernandes, said at a press conference on Sunday. 'Let's not speculate at the moment.'
He later posted a tweet on his Twitter account on Monday afternoon saying: 'Keeping positive and staying strong. My heart bleeds for all the relatives of the crew and passengers. Nothing is more important to us.'
The 50-year-old prominent South East Asian businessman Fernandes, owner of English football club Queens Park Rangers, built AirAsia from a small, heavily indebted company to a huge low-cost airline after buying it for just 50 cent in 2001. He later expanded into long-hail flights with the AirAsia X brand.
AirAsia flight QZ8501 departed Surabaya, in Indonesia, on Sunday at 5.30am local time, and was scheduled to land at Changi Airport, in Singapore, at 8.30am (Singapore local time). The scenes of anguish were reminiscent of those in March 2014, when Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 lost contact with air traffic control several hundred miles north of Singapore. No trace of the craft has been found.
The pilot of the plane has been named as Captain Iriyanto, while the co-pilot is believed to be Frenchman Remi Emmanual Plesel. A picture of the pilot has been posted on social media by his daughter Angela Ranastianis. His nephew praised Capt Irianto as 'a very caring person'
A family including a groom to be and his parents and brother were reportedly among those onboard.
Fox News reports that Alain Oktavianus Siaun and his family were intending to enjoy one last holiday together before he married. His fiancee Louise Sidharta told the Star in Malaysia she was trying to stay positive.
She said:
'I heard it on the radio and immediately browsed the Internet and saw the news. My heart knew by then that my fiancé was on that flight. We have to stay positive and hope that they (loved ones) could be found soon,' she added.
AirAsia confirmed there were 155 passengers on board - including 138 adults, 16 children and one infant - and also stated there were two pilots, four flight attendants and one engineer on board.
Nationalities of passengers and crew onboard are one Singaporean, one Malaysian, one British, one French, three South Koreans and 155 Indonesians.

When They Took The Girls, This Government Went Under ––Oby Ezekwesili speaks again
"I couldn't wrap my head around it," says Oby Ezekwesili. "More than two hundred schoolgirls!" Eight months on, she still sounds incredulous as she recalls the moment she heard Boko Haram had kidnapped more than 200 female students in north-eastern Nigeria.
The mass abduction, during which extremists stormed the girls' dorm at around midnight and forced the terrified teenagers on to trucks at gunpoint, propelled the remote village of Chibok into the global spotlight in April. The fact that it has stayed there is in large part due to the Bring Back Our Girls movement co-founded by Ezekwesili and three other Nigerian women. In the face of personal threats, they have remained driven by an abiding sense of outrage.
Ezekwesili, a former minister and co-founder of anti-corruption group Transparency International, doubted the news at first. She said, "I couldn't believe it was true. I was tweeting to all the government handles, presidential aides, TV stations. Nobody replied. Everybody just went under."
In the early aftermath, the official response – or lack of it – only compounded the horror. A presidential statement was more than two weeks in coming. The president's wife weighed in, personally interrogating some protest leaders and dismissing the abduction as a plot to bring down her husband. The army, meanwhile, was forced to backtrack on a bewildering claim it had rescued all of the girls.
In fact, around 50 of the girls had escaped by jumping out as they were driven towards Boko Haram's forest training camps. The others, however, remained missing.
Enraged by this apparent indifference, Ezekwesili and others organised a march to the national assembly in the capital, Abuja. Phalanxes of policemen barred the crowd of red-shirted protesters from approaching any official buildings, but the Bring Back Our Girls campaign was born. A Twitter hashtag of the same name caught the world's attention, with Ezekwesili leading the online movement.
"Since the beginning, they have tried to make us shut up," says Ezekwesili, who in July tweeted to say that security operatives had tried to prevent her boarding a flight to London, where she was appearing on a BBC programme.
All four of the movement's co-founders stand out in a society with acute gender disparity.
Alongside Ezekwesili, there is Hadiza Bala Usman, an opposition party member who brought the women together and made her name working with anti-corruption campaigners; lawyer and child rights advocate Maryam Uwais, whose scathing takedown of an MP's arguments in favour of child marriage has entered local campaigners' folklore; and Saudatu Mahdi, who runs a women's rights group helping to strengthen anti-violence legislation.
For her part, Ezekwesili has been sharpened for battle by two years in government, first under the department of mines, then later as education minister. Sporting a red beret over her close-cropped hair, she appears regularly at daily vigils in Abuja.
But some have accused them of using the movement as a platform for political gain . Official intimidation has never been far behind, and so toxic is partisanship in Nigeria that a significant minority still believe the abduction was an elaborate hoax to smear the government in upcoming elections that will probably be the most closely fought since a return to democracy in 1999.
Ezekwesili shrugs off such theories. "The way our government handled the Chibok girls' case goes beyond an election matter," she says impatiently. "This is not a one-time issue we discuss over elections. We need to have a deeper conversation about what kind of a nation we want to be."
Less easy to dismiss are those who insist the movement has outlived its usefulness. "Today is day 241," Ezekwesili counters, speaking slowly in an attempt to contain her obvious anger, "and the girls are still not back. If some people want to move on, it's their right.
"But they should remember we moved on when 69 secondary school boys were killed, and nothing changed," she continues, her voice rising despite herself. "Now here we are, with many more children killed. Do our children now have to choose between getting an education and dying? Some of us cannot move on and accept that kind of society."
Ezekwesili says she is haunted by a father who told her some parents preferred to accept their daughters were dead than live in a tormented limbo. Previous hostages who have escaped the sect have spoken of rape and mutilation, and some are so traumatised they no longer remember their own names.
Nonetheless, the father told her: "No matter who my daughter is when she comes back, she is my daughter and I want her back home."

Ex-Minister Labaran Maku gives Jonathan one week ultimatum
Labaran Maku, the immediate past Minister of Information, has given the Peoples Democratic Party PDP and President Goodluck Jonathan one week to correct anomalies in the party's governorship primary in the Nasarawa State. Maku gave the warning on Saturday while addressing youths in Wakama Villege of Nasarawa-Eggon LGA of the state.
He said that he had already written a petition to the appeal panel set up by the national headquarters of the party challenging the outcome of the primaries.
He mentioned the irregularities that occurred during the primary to include shortchanging of delegates names in many LGAs, intimidation and threatening of delegates, among others.
According to him, the fraud committed in the
ecent PDP governorship primaries in the Nasarawa state is worse than the one committed at the party's primaries in the state in 2007.
He said that he would take a decision and seek for peoples mandate directly if steps were not taken to correct these anomalies in the next one week.
"Since they think they can shortchange the names of delegates and intimidate them, we will see how they can shortchange and intimidate the members of the public," he said.
He vowed to move on with his ambition to contest the governorship seat of the state in 2015 and advised all those who thought they could deny the state of good leaders to have a rethink.
Maku promised that he would restore peace in the state within six months and reposition the state for total transformation if elected as governor in 2015 under PDP but the ticket is another man's hand.
He called on his supporters to remain calm and law abiding, stressing that he would make decisions known publicly in the next week.

4 More Nigerian Soldiers Sentenced To Death for Mutiny
A military court martial has sentenced four more Nigerian soldiers to death after finding them guilty of mutiny.
The soldiers, Bankole Taiwo, Ayodele Olawale, Isaiah Olofu and Adebayo Gbenga are set to die by firing squad.
The court delivered its judgment during a sitting in Abuja on the night of Wednesday, December 24. One other soldier, Sule Ochehepo was discharged and acquitted.
The latest judgment comes about a week after 54 soldiers were also sentenced to death for mutiny and refusal to fight against Boko Haram.
An initial death sentence was passed down in September on 12 soldiers who allegedly fired at their commander after blaming him for a terrorist ambush which claimed the lives of their colleagues.

Synagogue Victims: TB Joshua Sponsors 42 Family Members To Nigeria For Christmas
Nigerian preacher TB Joshua is flying the families of the victims of his church's collapse to Lagos to spend Christmas and the new year with him, the Synagogue Church of All Nations said on Monday.
"The prophet has invited the families of the deceased to come and spend time out there at the synagogue with the other church members for Christmas and very importantly… the end of the year candlelight services," said church spokesperson Kirsten Nematandani.
Forty-four family members who had accepted the offer would fly out on Christmas day and return on January 2.
It is believed 85 people from South Africa were among those killed when a multi-storey guesthouse attached to the church collapsed in Lagos on September 12."The purpose is to spend time with the families. As we know the families are going through a difficult time… this is part of the process the church is undergoing," he said.
The church would offer the bereaved families spiritual and emotional support and they would have a chance to interact with Joshua. He would fund the entire trip including all transport, accommodation, meals and visa applications. Nematandani said Joshua had always been open about the incident and that he would "walk this journey with the families… and continuously support them".
Those families who were unable to visit the church because they did not have documentation or already had other plans were invited to come to the church at a later stage, Nematandani said. The families visiting the church would spend their time attending services and programmes run by "evangelists and wise men".
"They will have time to go to the prayer mountain to have quality time as an individual and talking to God."
Nematandani expressed condolences on behalf of the church for the families of the 11 victims whose bodies had not yet been returned to South Africa.
"We want to express messages of sympathy and condolences to those families and hoping that the time will come when those bodies will come home."He said Joshua would not rest until the bodies were sent home.
Members of the church would spend time with those families over the festive period to support them."The church will be on the ground with them, sending them love and support from TB Joshua, even though it could be seen as a black Christmas," he said.

My dad forced me to become suicide bomber —Girl Confesses
The 13-year-old girl who was caught in suicide bomber mission, Zahra'u Babban Gida, has narrated how her own father forced her on a suicide bombing mission to spoil this Christmas in Kano State.
The teenage girl, who was paraded by Kano Police command and the Department of State Services in Kano on Wednesday, said: "My mother and I were taken to Boko Haram members in the bush by my biological father, whom I believe has been a member, though not to my knowledge. And since then, we have remained under the custody of Boko Haram."
"It was days ago that they called on me and asked me whether I should do (Istishadiyya), that is, commit suicide for the sake of getting reward in the hereafter. I told them I wouldn't but they threatened to shoot me if I failed to abide by their request of wearing explosives to kill people.
"Afterwards I accepted to wear the explosives, among other two female colleagues. We left Baluchi and arrived in Kano on December 10. Our guide engaged in a series of phone call before we arrived in Kano and we found a tricycle waiting for us. He picked the three of us to Kwari market where the mission was to be accomplished," she narrated.
According to her, though they lived in Kano at Dawanau area before her father took them to Baluchi State, their hometown was in Damaturu, Yobe State.
Zahrau said that there were armed men of different racial backgrounds in the bush, which was surrounded by armed men.
Zahrau added that, together, they had planned to detonate their explosives at different points, but she couldn't detonate hers because the first explosion affected her as she sustained injuries.
As a result of the injury, Zahrau said: "I ran into the streets and stopped a commercial tricyclist who took me to Dawanau area where I lived with my parents in the past. I met only women in the area because their husbands were not at home. Later a passerby advised us to go to hospital. We heeded his advice and went to hospital. I was receiving treatment when the tricycle driver found my explosives vest, which I had dropped in his tricycle, and brought it to the hospital, claiming it was mine."
At that point, she said, the soldiers took her away.

Who rocked the dress? Kim K vs Toyin Lawani
Can't get over this dress. Kim's dress is a Balmain, not sure if Toyin's is but they look so similar. Who rocked the dress?

Graphic photos from failed suicide bombing in Gombe state
A male suicide bomber was killed yesterday December 23rd after he rammed his IED laden Honda car into a military checkpoint in Baroja, Gombe state. Find the military press statement below...
A suicide bomber who rammed into a military check point in Bajoga, Gombe State yesterday, failed to achieve his mission. His attempt to escape also failed as he was brought down by vigilant soldiers when he tried to flee after hitting a military Amoured Personnel Carrier with his IED laden Honda car. The explosives which failed to detonate have been evacuated and handed to the police.
Also in Kano, security forces have raided the terrorists' hideout in Nasarawa Local Government Area leading to the arrest of bomb making experts who are already helping in the investigation into activities of bombers lately. Officers believe that the efforts will yield useful clues.
Troops deployed in all locations of the counter terrorism campaign have been directed to sustain the tempo of operations all through the period of seasonal celebrations and ensure that the intention of terrorists to attack civilian target while avoiding troops is duly frustrated.

Photos: 13 year old girl arrested in Kano wearing explosive vest
The Kano state Police command today Dec. 24th arrested a 13 year old girl identified as Zahra'u Babban Gida who was found with explosives strapped on her body opposite the Kantin-Kwari textile market, same place where two female suicide bombers detonated bombs two weeks ago killing many.
The Kano State Commissioner of Police Alhaji Tashid Aderile Shinaba said she was arrested by police officers who found her moves suspicious. When interrogated, the young girl said her father was the one who took her to the people who strapped her with the bombs.
According to her, the unknown men told her she had to carry out the suicide attack in order to make heaven. She said the men told her they would kill her if she doesn't follow through with the bomb attack. The Kano state government however said that the young girl was not one of the missing Chibok girls.
