EFCC arraigns UNIBEN undergraduate over $12,000 internet scam

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Thursday, October 30, 2014 arraigned an undergraduate of the University of Benin, Kenneth Rukewe Ebulebefore Justice E. F Ikponmwen of an Edo State High Court, sitting in Benin- City on a 6- count charge bordering on forgery, obtaining money by false pretence and possession of fraudulent documents.The accused person allegedly duped Sabine Albert, a German, of the sum of $12, 088, 75 through fraudulent claims.Rukewe, 30, a final year student of Computer and Statistics at the University of Benin, was arrested by officials of a new generation bank on May 28, 2014 in Benin City and handed over to the EFCC for further investigation.
Troubles started for him when Albert alleged that within two months after he had internet contact with him, Rukewe fraudulently obtained the sum of $12,088,75 (Twelve Thousand Eighty Eight Dollars and Seventy Five Cents) from him.
Rukewe allegedly posed to Albert as an English businessman on transit in Nigeria. He gave his name as Bob Albert and told his victim that he had a contract with a Nigerian company worth €1.200, 000.00 and that he needed a loan to facilitate a transaction with the company. He promised to pay back the loan and even doubled it because he was sure of pulling through the transactions. He also told Albert that he had complications and suffered a robbery attack.
Rukewe also falsely told Albert that, a levy of of N1,975,861 (One Million, Nine Hundred and Seventy Five Thousand, Eight Hundred and Sixty One Naira only) was imposed on him by the Federal Inland Revenue Service for the release of his International Passport, and a cheque worth 1, 200,000 Euros. He also pleaded for a flight ticket to London.
Based on all these, Albert offered to loan him the money by sending it through Western Union, only to discover that he had been scammed.
Investigation also revealed that the suspect had defrauded other German nationals to the tune of $110,975.00USD (One Hundred and Ten thousand, Nine Hundred and Seventy Five United States Dollars) between May 2013 and January 2014.
When the charges were read to the defendant, he pleaded not guilty.
One of the charges read in part:
"Ebule Kenneth Rukewe (a.k.a. Bob Albert), on or about the 17th day of July, 2013 within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, with Intent to defraud, obtained the sum of $12,088,75 (Twelve Thousand Eighty Eight Dollars and Seventy Five Cents) from Sabine Albert (a German National), under the false pretence that the money represented part payment of N1,975,861 (One Million Nine Hundred and Seventy Kobo) levy imposed one Bobby Albert (a British citizen) by Federal Inland Revenue Service for the release of the International Passport, Cheque worth 1,200,000 Euros and flight ticket to London of the said Bobby Albert, which representation you knew to be false".
In view of the plea of the defendant, prosecution counsel, Kayode Oni asked for a trial date and prayed the court to remand the defendant in prison custody. The defence counsel, Maureen Morka informed the court of her application for bail dated September 9, 2014 and prayed the court to grant the defendant bail.
Justice Ikponmwen granted the defendant bail in the sum of One Million Naira and two sureties in like sum. The sureties must be resident in Benin City and must be gainfully employed in Edo State. The defendant must also produce his student identity card.
Justice Ikponmwen subsequently adjourned the case to November 21, 2014 for hearing and ordered that the defendant be remanded in prison custody pending the perfection of his bail.

Photos: Nnamdi Azikiwe Uni students design formular student race car

Five final year students of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, have designed and fabricated a formula student race car as a passing out project. Yep, they did.The students are Okoyenta Augustus,Okeke Chukwuebuka,Ezeani Chikeluba‎,Ofoegbu Kenechukwu, andIgbokwe Ebenezer. (all pictured above).
The car was designed under the supervision of Dr. S C Nwigbo. The project took about a year and six months to complete, with the students working under severe condition in regards to power supply, poor machinery and attending lectures. But they never backed down, and have achieve this incredible feat.‎

Looks like they may seek the death penalty for Kano child-bride

Looks like the Kano State govt is really seeking the death penalty for 14-year-old child bride Wasila Tasi'u, who allegedly killed her 35 year old husband, Umar Sani and 3 of his friends with rat poison in the village of Unguwar Yansoro in Kano, 17 days after she was forced to marry him in April 2014.
The case was heard in court yesterday Oct. 30th and AFP's Aminu Abubakar writes that prosecutors at the High Court in Gezawa, have filed an amended complaint that charged the young girl with one count of murder over the killing. Lead prosecutor Lamido Abba Soron-Dinki said that if convicted, the charge is "punishable with death" and indicated the state would seek the maximum penalty.

Tasi'u entered the court wearing a cream-coloured hijab and was escorted by two policemen.
Her parents, who have condemned their daughter's alleged act, were in the public gallery -- the first time the three were in the same room since Tasi'u's arrest in April, her legal representatives said.
The English-language charge sheet was translated into Hausa for the accused by the court clerk.
Tasi'u refused to answer when asked if she understood the charges.
The case was adjourned for 30 minutes so the charges could be better explained to the defendant, but when the alleged offences were read again Tasi'u stayed silent, turned her head to the wall and broke down in tears.
"The court records (that) she pleads not guilty," Judge Mohammed Yahaya said, apparently regarding her silence as equal to a denial of the charges and adjourned the case until November 26Photo credit: AFP

Boko Haram takes over Hometown of Chief of Defence Staff

What manner of ceasefire is the Presidency negotiating with those Boko Haram people?
The dreaded terrorists have captured Vimtim, the hometown of Nigeria's Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Air Marshall Alex Badeh, as they continue their onslaught in the north eastern parts of the country.
The annexation of Vimtim is a consolidation of the terrorists' earlier victory who captured the border town of Mubi as they overran military barracks, police area command and other strategic places in the town.
Reports from the area indicate that before the capture of Victim, a reinforcement of soldiers sent to the area led to a sustained battle with the insurgents throughout the night before the insurgents finally overpowered the soldiers and captured the town...
According to LEADERSHIP, many people were killed in the cross-fire as thousands of residents tried to escape to Yola, Maiha and adjoining villages of Cameroon Republic where Cameroonian gendarmes were reported to have prevented those that tried to cross the border from entering their country.
It was reported that the insurgents had a field day looting and burning the property of the displaced people who had deserted the town. A trapped resident of Mubi, who said God had spared his life, reported that the local government secretariat, the Mubi International Cattle Market and other important public and private buildings had been burnt down by the insurgents.
Dozens of Soldiers, Policemen killed in Mubi
Dozens of soldiers and policemen have reportedly died in the attack by Boko Haram insurgents who took control of the commercial border town of Mubi on Thursday.
Trapped residents said the insurgents are effectively in control of the town as they hoisted their flags on the military barracks, police area command and the palace of the Emir of Mubi as well as taking over the higher institutions in the town.
Reports from the area also indicate that the insurgents have mounted serious surveillance on the town just as they have imposed a 24-hour curfew in order to consolidate their grip on the place. It was also reported that they have mounted checkpoints and are preventing residents from fleeing the town.
Residents also said the insurgents had burnt down many places, including the town's main market, shopping malls and other business hubs.
Narrating his ordeal, one of the trapped residents, Dauda Mubi, said the displaced residents were in a pathetic situation as their life hangs in the balance in the hands of Boko Haram, nobody to help them.

British Divorce Court Orders Scorned Nigerian Woman to Pay Ex-Husband £100,000

A scorned Nigerian woman who claims she was 'duped' into marrying a billionaire with a secret wife has been told she must pay the tycoon £100,000 by British divorce courts.
According to DailyMail, Mercy Ogbedo, 45, thought her dreams had come true in 2002 when she went through a picturesque marriage ceremony with Nigerian shipping magnate Moses Taiga. Her feet were washed by village elders and a 'bride price' was paid for her, before the couple drank from the same cup, danced and cut an exotic wedding cake.
But Mrs Ogbedo, from Finchley, north London, who has two children by Mr Taiga, a billionaire who
owns a string of London properties, says she discovered later that her husband already had a wife from 1974. For more than a decade she has been petitioning the British divorce courts for financial support from Mr Taiga's nine-figure fortune.
But last year a divorce judge ruled that despite the mother of two being 'of limited means', she could not be awarded a maintenance from Mr Taiga because he had their marriage voided in Nigeria. Instead she was ordered to pay £100,000 towards his legal bills.
Challenging that ruling, her barrister, Timothy Scott QC, said the former couple's lavish 2002 ceremony had 'duped' her into thinking she was a lawfully wedded wife. The barrister told Appeal Court judge Lord Justice McFarlane that soon after her 'wedding' she discovered that 28 years previously Mr Taiga had married another woman in church in Benin.
'In March 2002 Mrs Ogbedo and Mr Taiga entered into a customary marriage in Nigeria, which would have been valid but for the husband's prior marriage. The wife says she was duped, She should be permitted to apply for financial relief in England by virtue of that marriage ceremony,' he added.Mr Taiga, who is also a Grandmaster in the Nigerian arm of the Freemasons, has been pursuing parallel proceedings in the African courts. Last year a Nigerian court found that the 2002 ceremony was not just invalid but a 'non-marriage' and she has no rights over his fortune.
The Court of Appeal in London has refused to overrule that decision, although Lord Justice McFarlane said he had 'real sympathy' for her predicament and has given her the right to appeal paying his £100,000 legal bill in the latest hearing. The full hearing of Mrs Ogbedo's challenge to the costs order will take place at a later date.
Since splitting up with Mrs Ogbedo, Mr Taiga has ended his 1974 marriage and married a third woman, Yinka Taiga - with whom he has quadruplets.
