According to some sources, the idea for All Saints' Day goes back to the fourth century when the Greek Christians kept a festival on the first Sunday after Pentecost (in late May or early June) in honor of all martyrs and saints. Other sources say that a commemoration of "All Martyrs" began to be celebrated as early as 270 CE but no specific month or date is recorded. Pope Gregory IV made All Saints' Day an authorized holiday in 837 CE. It is speculated that the chosen date for the event, November 1, may have been an attempt to supplant the pagan Festival of the Dead (also known as Samhain or the feast of Saman, lord of death).
All Saints' Day, which is celebrated globally, is closely tied with All Souls' Day, which was first instituted at the monastery in Cluny in 993 CE and quickly spread throughout the Christian world. All Saints' Day is also closely linked with Halloween, which is a shortened for the name "All Hallows' Even".

Nigerian Army Retires 15 Generals

The Nigerian Army has retired 15 generals from the Nigerian Army School of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering (NASEME) Auchi, Edo State, from active service. Among the 15, are 10 brigadier-generals while the remaining five are major-generals.
The names of the major-generals are:
Edem Ekwo, Thompson Oliomoghe, Richard Maduegbunam, Friday Airende and Abass Adekanye, while the brigadier generals include Idi Adamu, Patrick Oviaghase, Samuel Ayo, Peter Aremu, Jacob Amao, Joshua Ibilaye, Ibrahim Alawode, Samuel Adesogan, Chukwuka Ani and Abel Okpeki.
Speaking at a pulling out parade held in honour of the retirees, the corps commander of NASEME, Major General S. Labaran said that the retired officers served the country meritoriously.

Canada suspends visas for residents of Ebola-hit African countries

In a bid to also stop the spread of Ebola into its borders, the Canadian government today October 31st announced its suspension of visa applications for travelers from Ebola-hit countries.
Below is the statement released today by Canada's health minister, Rona Ambrose
"Our number one priority is to protect Canadians. We continue to work with domestic and international partners to aid efforts to respond to the outbreak in West Africa, while strengthening our domestic preparedness here at home."
The Canadian immigration minister, Chris Alexander said Canadian immigrationauthorities will not process any visa application for individuals who have been in any Ebola-affected nation 'within three months prior to the date of the application.'
"Canada has been a leader in the international efforts to respond to theEbola outbreakin West Africa.The precautionary measures announced today build on actions we have taken to protect the health and safety of Canadians here at home." he said.

Vogue L'Uomo Italia has just featured menswear great Okunoren on its November 2014 issue which has American female rap sensation Nicki Minaj on its cover.
